Shaped by renowned designer Chris Bangle, its bold, unconventional lines—with a long bonnet, compact rear, and wide wheel housings—defied the norms of sports car design. Powered by the potent S52 straight-six engine from the E36 M3, and later the even more powerful “S54” from the E46 M3, the M Coupe delivered a thrilling 315 horsepower that that Car and Driver magazine praised for its handling characteristics and “gratuitous displays of power.” Drawing inspiration from BMW's heritage, with cues like the oval overtaking mirrors and chrome gills reminiscent of the 507 Roadster, the M Coupe's design embodied a perfect blend of innovation and tradition. Its performance was as captivating as its looks, offering superior handling and practical cargo space compared to its M Roadster sibling, making it an attractive option for driving enthusiasts. The Z3 M Coupe has been a beloved classic since debut, admired by collectors for its unique proportions, dynamic driving experience, and undeniable charisma, solidifying its place among the hallowed circle of BMW M-cars.
This 2001 M Coupe was ordered new in Southern California as the only example to be finished in striking Phoenix Yellow Metallic (445) over a two-tone Black and Grey Nappa leather interior (Q6TT) with a sunroof. The clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report shows that the car remained with its original owner in southern California, clearly being cherished and sparingly driven; by 2023 it had covered just over 36,000 miles. An exceptionally clean and unmodified example, the M Coupe displays factory VIN stickers on its body panels, and upon paint meter inspection appears to retain its original factory-applied paintwork. Likewise, its original interior is in excellent shape and its engine bay retains factory decals, stickers, paint pen markings and equipment. In January 2025, the M Coupe was serviced by ABR Houston European Repair Specialists of The Woodlands, Texas, where the brake fluid was flushed, the engine oil and filter changed, and a comprehensive inspection was completed. Today, it remains in superb condition, with just under 37,000 original miles at the time of cataloging. Complete with its original owner's manuals, keys, tool kit, air compressor, and a file of service documentation, this one-of-one 2001 BMW M Coupe remains a genuinely captivating and eye-catching example.
