I just know that someday I will regret this. But for everything there is a season.
Up for sale is my 2001 M Coupe, Silver over black, 92xxx miles. I am the third owner and acquired this shoe here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-m-coupe-23/
The most significant updates since acquiring the vehicle has been to install a Randy Forbes kit (there were no tears in the subframe when I got it—strictly preventative), and new diff gears, it’s now 3.46 (factory was 3.15, still have that gearset and it goes with the car).
My goal for this car was always to create the perfect driver-level M Coupe, and I think in large part I succeeded-- all of the major pain points have been addressed and it's ready to be enjoyed for many thousands of miles:
Rod bearings--addressed under previous ownership, and when done the original bearings showed NO evidence of premature/unusual wear
Vanos--addressed under my ownership
Subframe--also yes.
I have recent Blackstone reports and it demonstrates that the powertrain and driveline are in excellent mechanical shape. Docs go back to the first owner.
Aesthetically the car is very original--Roadstars in 7/10 shape, no curb rash, no bends and well balanced, but just scratches and wear from 25 years.
Exhaust is also original, everyone said to do that at the same time as the subframe but I just don't like how those sound. So I spent the money on fabrication and kept the original rasp intact.
The car passed smog last week, and registration is now paid, just waiting on the stickers.
The interior is all original and intact, no glovebox sag, headliner still in good shape. Window regulators are also in good shape, just had them greased up and they are smooth and quiet. I am going to have it detailed this week and as part of that I'm taking the seats out and giving them the full leatherique treatment. At that point I'll also be installing new Double Bee Garage seat mounts.
Also from Double Bee Garage--I replaced the 3rd brake light, which had a few burned out LEDs. Nice little touch and it was bugging me, so glad I did it.
To sum up--this is a fine automobile that can be enjoyed as-is or as a starting point for an excellent build.
So now for The Worst Thing Ever:
There's gotta be a catch, right? Well when I bought the car it had a clear bra that had been applied to the nose. No big deal, but it was yellowing and so I had it removed. Turns out that a section of the hood had been painted, and then clear-bra'd to help conceal it. Either way I missed it when I did my PPI and I just hope the previous owner's karma has recovered. I firmly believe that it is the original hood and that it has never been off the car, but there is a nasty little shadow in the paint that, if you're like me, will be the first thing you'll see when you walk up to it. I had considered wrapping it at one point (Estoril, of course), but what can you do.
I offer it now for your consideration at $42,500. I have a few recent pictures but will be posting a lot more when it comes out of the detail shop. And of course the BaT listing has loads of pictures, all of which are still a good representation of the vehicle's condition.
